Weekly vacuuming is a great way to keep up on dust build up in the fibers of your carpet, rugs & upholstery. This build up can lead to allergy issues especially if there are furry animals in the house that tend to shed a lot. A central vacuum system is generally a better designed system as the noise is confined to a specific area of your home, usually a garage or the basement, and the suction power far outweighs the capabilities of the plug it self-contained units. Another awesome benefit of investing in a central vac system is they have a giant container for storing everything your vacuum sucks up so you need to empty the bag/storage bin much less frequently compared to the self-contained units.
It can be tempting after spilling a glass of juice or wine, to just leave it and continue with your day. But don't!
The longer liquids or other messes sit on the carpet, the more tightly the substances bond to the carpet fibers. Immediately place down a cloth or paper towel and place a light weight such as a pot or pan to quickly absorb the spill. Do not rub the cloth in as this will cause the spill to bind into the fibers more strongly. The use of simply cleaning agents like Resolve or even a multi-purpose cleaner can really help get the mess off before it sets. If the spills happens without anyone noticing, maybe the kids or a pet got into some trouble, and it does settle into place. You may need the assistance of a professional carpet cleaner to remove the stain.
A first line of defense can be as simple as a clear plastic mat or a decorative rug at the entrance to all doors in the house or apartment which can prevent serious damage from taking place to the carpets at those locations. Snow, rain, mud, sleet, dirt and anything else from the outdoors will be tracked into the living space at these locations. These contaminants will cause your carpets to degrade much faster than if there were a protective layer. If you want to spend a little extra to get a more ornate rug, it will actually compliment the look of the room. The nice thing about using a rug is it can be removed and be professionally cleaned outside your home if that's your preference.
A Teflon treatment application can help preserve the integrity of your carpets by creating a hydrophobic layer which prevents the ingress of water and other substances from penetrating the fibers. It's recommended that you spray or apply a bit of the protectant on a small hidden section of your carpet, rug or upholstery and allow it some time to set to ensure it doesn't change the colour or stain your fabrics. This rarely happens but it is better to be safe than sorry! Another way to test to to apply the protectant than rub it off with a clean white towel. If any of the colour of your fabric is apparent on the towel, do not use the treatment on the rest of your carpets. It can destroy them!
